Prof. LU Mengqian

Prof. LU Mengqian is Professor of Civil and Environmental Engineering, Finance, and Ocean Science at HKUST, and serves as Directors of the Otto Poon Center for Climate Resilience and Sustainability (CCRS), the World Sustainable Development Institute (WSDI), and the Digital Meteorological Services Innovation Lab (DMS) at the HKUST Shanghai Centre. She received her BEng with First Class Honors and Academic Achievement Medal from HKUST and her PhD in Earth and Environmental Engineering from Columbia University. Her research integrates AI and data science with hydroclimate science and predictive Earth system prediction. She develops  seamless prediction across weather, subseasonal-to-seasonal, and climate timescales, translating forecasts into decision support for infrastructure resilience, water-energy-food systems, navigation safety, renewable energy, and climate risk management. She chairs the UNESCO-endorsed WMO-partnered Decade Science Program “Seamless Prediction and Services for Sustainable Natural and Built Environments” under the International Decade of Sciences for Sustainable Development.

Prof. Lu leads meteoNEX, an AI-driven weather-to-climate forecasting platform that won a Gold Medal at the International Exhibition of Inventions Geneva and provides prediction support to the Shanghai Meteorological Services / China Meteorological Administration. She also leads OCEANEX, a maritime environment prediction system operating in Hong Kong’s Port Community System, managed by Logistics and Supply Chain MultiTech R&D Centre (LSCM).

Dedicated to her alma mater, she actively serves on the HKUST Council and Senate. Prof. Lu last joined the Rising Stars Women in Engineering in 2018 as a panelist.
