Akihiro NAKAO received his B.S. (1991) in Physics and M.E. (1994) in Information Engineering from the University of Tokyo. After working at IBM in the United States and IBM Tokyo Research Laboratory, he received his M.S. and Ph.D. in Computer Science from Princeton University. 

In 2005, he was appointed Associate Professor, and in February 2014, Professor of Applied Computer Science at the Interfaculty Initiative in Information Studies, Graduate School of Interdisciplinary Information Studies, the University of Tokyo. 

Since 2020, he has served as Special Adviser to the President of the University of Tokyo(-present). In April 2021, he moved to the School of Engineering, the University of Tokyo as a Professor, where he has since served as Director of the Collaborative Research Institute for Next Generation Cyber Infrastructure (NGCI) (-present). 

In 2024, he was appointed President of The Institute of Electronics, Information and Communication Engineers (IEICE). In the same year, he was also appointed Co-Chair of the XG Mobile Promotion Forum (XGMF) and then Chair in 2026.

Since 2026, he has held the position of Vice Dean of the School of Engineering, Director of Institute for Innovation in International Engineering Education, and Director of Corporate & External Relations Planning Office (CERPO), the University of Tokyo(-present). 

His research interests include information science and information communications.
