Professor Liem obtained her BEng degree from the School of Mechanical and Production Engineering, Nanyang Technological University. Her undergraduate study was supported by the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) with a 4-year merit-based full scholarship. She earned her Master of Science (S.M.) degrees in Computation for Design and Optimization (supported by the Singapore-MIT Alliance Fellowship Award), and Aeronautics/Astronautics, from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). She then pursued her PhD degree in the Multidisciplinary Design Optimization (MDO) Laboratory, University of Toronto Institute for Aerospace Studies (UTIAS), as a Vanier Canada Graduate Scholar. She is also a 2012 Amelia Earhart Fellow. During her academic career at HKUST, she has been twice awarded the School of Engineering Teaching Excellence Appreciation Awards (in 2018 and 2021). She is also the 2021 UGC Teaching Awardee for the Early Career Faculty Members category.
